Note for the stage

All the versions of this article: [English] [français]

A story of the practice of oriental dance as a tribute to a great master. An empty stage where spaceis structured by light alone. The dancer is moving in front of a white curtain which is used as a screen and as an illuminated cyclorama. All through the show, the dancer creates a triangular relationship between Ibrahim Akef’s image, present by means of video, and the drummer, her immediate and actual partner, both image and actor being involved in a true dialogue with each other.

The play relates the encounter with the master, the fascinating power of his dance which can be seen through the video. Choreographies from the repertoire alternate with dance/drums duets where dance keeps varying between construction and deconstruction, from the slightest movement to the trance, revealing in a brilliant and humorous way through a questions/answers game the interdependent relationship uniting music with dance as well as the complicity existing between the dancer and the musician.

Farid Atrache composed Egyptian musical pieces inspired by Oum Kalthoum’s repertoire to accompany the choreography. In the second version, they are played on stage by a traditional orchestra : darbouka, douala, rek, daf, sagates, accordion, violin, koala, oud, kanoun and voice.
